Quectel’s LPWA Modules Displayed at Industry Giants’ MWC Booths

 

The annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) unveiled the curtain on February 27 in Barcelona, Spain, with many industry leaders bringing their flagship products and cutting-edge technologies.

As a leading global supplier of GSM/GPRS, UMTS/HSPA/(+), LTE and GNSS modules, Quectel Wireless Solutions also participated in the 4-day event and showcased its latest LPWA products and success cases.

Quectel’s LPWA products include the NB-IoT BC95 module which is among the world's first NB-IoT modules compliant with 3GPP R13 standards, and the BG96 module which supports multi-mode CAT M1 and CAT NB1 and will be pre-integrated with ThingSpace, Verizon's web-based IoT platform.

At MWC 2017, these two LPWA modules and their application cases will be also displayed at the booths of many communications giants, such as Vodafone, GSMA, CMCC, Qualcomm, Huawei and Ericsson.

At Vodafone’s booth, Quectel and Sanchuan Wisdom  showed a live demonstration of an NB-IoT enabled water meter, to demonstrate how NB-IoT technology is revolutionizing the water meter industry. The water meter embedded with a Quectel NB-IoT BC95 module, is able to transmit data via Vodafone’s live NB-IoT network using Band20. With the Smart Water Management Platform, the demo shows device status, real-time meter flow, and displays warning information such as high temperature, high pressure and water leakage.

Hisense, one of China’s leading home appliance manufacturers, revealed its Smart Home Solution with NB-IoT at MWC. The solution adopts Quectel’s BC95 module to realize remote control of air conditioner via mobile phone. In the near future, such applications can be utilized in more household electrical appliances.

GSMA, the organizer of MWC, launched “The Mobile IoT Innovators Showcase” competition during the expo. As one of the showcase sponsors, Quectel provides an easy-to-use BC95 development kit which helps with the entrants to develop new products and solutions that utilize licensed Mobile IoT technology.Other sponsors include well-known enterprises such as AT&T, Vodafone, CMCC and Intel. Finally, CMCC, Hisense and Quectel were awarded “Excellent GSMA MIoT Showcase”.

 

 

The availability of commercial LPWA solutions is expected to take off this year, and there are currently over 30 commercial pilots around the world across a number of sectors such as smart parking, smart water meters, smart grids and smart gas amongst others, according to a press release by GSMA.

 

LPWA solutions are also set to exceed 2G, 3G and 4G to become the leading technology for IoT connectivity with 1.4 billion connections by 2022, according to research by Machina Research. By 2025 nearly 20% or 5 billion mobile connections will be cellular or LPWA.

 

Besides LPWA modules, Quectel also showed its automotive grade module AG35 which is ideal for automotive premarket applications, and the LTE series modules, such as EC21 CAT-1, EC25 CAT-4 and Smart SC20, which can be widely used in many fields of smart city, smart agriculture, wireless POS, security and medical care. With the rapid growth of IoT, Quectel will develop more modules to help build a smarter world.
